HEY brisBANG!

WHERE ARE THE HOTSPOTS? WHAT'S THE 411? WHAT'RE THE COOL KIDS LISTENING TO?

seriously though,
where are the best venues for hosting eighteenth birthday parties [first preference is a club, then a cocktail bar, then a bar. no halls because i'm scared of gatecrashers etc]?

NEEDS:
  • alcohol [option for byo or buy at bar]
  • under eighteens until a certain time [a lot of places wristband them and they leave at say 10, when the premises becomes a licenced club] without parents' accompaniment
  • dancing [the guests will dance - I DO NOT WANT HIRED DANCERS]
  • music [byo would be favourable, so i can make a playlist on my ipod and just hook it up to speakers at the venue]
  • to cost under $1K, preferably around $600
  • space for 100-150 people
  • trendy modern atmosphere

i've already checked out the family, the chalk hotel & the regatta.

also, has anyone been to oxford 152? i found them on my247.com.au... reviews?

    thanks partypopsicles

Do you mean Oxford 152? I wouldn't bother with there unless your going for very upmarket and have $$'s to burn - Although it's technically in the suburbs it's still very 25+ professional atmosphere..lots of suits etc...as for the other places - From experience, I suggest not mentioning its for an 18th when you do a ring around...a lot of places baulk at those because they have to sift though a heap of ID checks, think younger people = more drama's etc...I'd suggest saying you want to host a birthday party and there may be some under 18's at the start and how can they accommodate that etc..

    yeah probably haha
well i already enquired to their functions manager and they are very reasonably priced!
but yes, i am looking for an upmarket, trendy atmosphere... and it needs to be close to the city/valley for obvious transport reasons...
i've been dropping email enquiries so far and have told all the people i have spoken to that it's for an eighteenth. i think it's more important that i'm straight up with them rather than finding out after i fall in love with a venue that they don't host eighteenths [eg. the regatta].

i'm looking at jade buddha / shadow lounge upstairs from there now... any comments on the atmosphere etc?
where are the 'hottest' joints around? like, family was an obvious choice but they want to charge me $3-4K, which is a couple of grand too much!

thanks for your advice so far... as the party's for me, i haven't been around much [only ever to the family, once].

My sister had a few hassles with Jade Buddha for her 25th last month. I would suggest not using them if you want a birthday that isn't filled with stress.

At the last minute the party venue was changed to Uber in West End, which has an awesome atmosphere and really good party prices. They were really accomodating and gave us a great deal. However, there's not really a particular dance space area, so it may not be what you're looking for. I liked it, but i'm not exactly a dancer. It's more of a bar with loud music but really cool chandelier type thingys.

On the upside, Gypsy who used to be on Home and Away works there. It's true all the soapie stars move to Queensland!!

can you go into detail with the jade buddha hassles please? their shadow lounge is looking really good right now so that would be a darn shame...

i'll check out uber though for sure... if it's a bar with funky lights i'm sure my friends will find spaces to dance!

Jade budda would be a good idea then...and it's close to transport and has a cab rank with an attendant pretty much at the door. Oxford 152 is ok but the couple of times I've been there getting a cab's been a bit of a wait compaired to the city (even though it also has a rank at the door) I think the cabs just find it easier to go to the city maybe.

I know there might be problems with the under 18s at Family, but I held a birthday in the VIP suite once and it was fantastic. Highly recommended. ($2k, pays for 35 people on the door list, private VIP suite, waitstaff, own security and $1600 bar tab if I recall correctly)

no problems with under eighteens at all... but it's $3K for three hours or $4K [incl $1.5/$2.5K respectively] with the use of the VIP lounge... and i want 100-150 people
    pity though
it was hot when i snuck in there before hahaha

Someone snuck in there when I had my 21st and I almost beat the shit out of her. 'Yah, the girl having the birthday invited me!' No I didn't? 'Got any coke?' Here's a fist! Rude :(

club/pub type venues that serve alcohol will generaly not go for any under 18's because it's too hard to keep track of them and make sure they can't drink.

you wont have to worry about gate crashers if you hire a hall because it will be closed to the public. they can only get in if you let them. if you go to a club/pub typre venue there will be more chance of gate crashers unless you are in a separate room or the venue closed to the public.

personaly, i would go for a community hall.

from experience, there are many clubs/bars/cocktail lounges that are willing to host minors on the grounds that they are wristbanded, and leave at a given time.

the reasons i said no way to community halls are
    1. they aren't trendy or modern
    2. too much effort on my part, organising set up/clean up & security
    3. security isn't guaranteed. in my experience from friends' parties, hired security guards are useless most of the time, and the last time i went to a party at a hired out hall, a couple dozen surbs crashed the party. they came with trolleybars and a couple of guns. we had to climb over the fence to get away while the police came to round them up.

    ie NEVER AGAIN

and it's my eighteenth and i want it at a club / cocktail bar
    but thanks anyway

really? i was under the impression that they wouldnt do that. one of my mates was doing an 18+ gig at the areana but i couldnt go even if i wore an arm band saying i was unde age. maybe its just the areana and them being weird about ONE minor in a crowd of drunks...

yeah a hall is far too much work when you think about it.

wow.. thats a tough party you went to. hard to the core up their. yo.

yeah...i wanted a pub or something for mine.... i went to skirmish. that was great.

    good luck planning it!
